It is simple enough for even the most inexperienced beginner. These are lightly fried, giving them a delightful slight crispness with their soft texture. They are served with stew, curry, chili, or grilled meat. Many people like to sprinkle them with seasoned salt after they are cooked for additional flavor.

5-Ingredient Easy and TX Flatbread

3 cups (361g) Panhandle Milling All Purpose Flour

1 Tbsp. baking powder

1 tsp. salt

1/3 cup olive oil or vegetable oil

1 cup (227g) cold water

3 Tbsp. vegetable oil, additional for frying

Directions:

  • Place the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl and stir to combine.
  • Mix the oil and cold water to make a soft, smooth dough. Adjust with flour or water as needed. The dough should be moist but not sticky.
  • Divide the dough into 10 to 12 equal pieces, then roll them into balls. Cover with plastic wrap and let rest for 10 minutes. Dip each piece in flour and roll to a rough circle or oval about 1/4″ thick.
  • Preheat a heavy-bottomed skillet on the stovetop. Add one tablespoon of oil and heat until the oil starts to shimmer in the pan.
  • Fry each flatbread in hot oil for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown. Flip and fry on the second side for another 2 minutes. Transfer from the pan to a rack to cool slightly before serving. Add more oil as needed for frying successive batches.

Variation: Add 1 Tbsp. Cumin seed and 1 Tbsp. garlic powder to the dry ingredients for an Indian-style flatbread to serve with curry.
